Capturing the Scale and Value of the Voluntary, Community and Social Enterprise Organisations

“A Real Values Thing”. The VCSE Workforce: What People Do And Why They Do It

This new research report explores the motivations and experiences of the VCSE workforce. This insightful study provides a deeper understanding of why individuals choose to volunteer and how they contribute to the wider workforce.

In June 2023, the BOB VCSE Health Alliance published a detailed report (see below) on the VCSE sector, revealing that approximately 7,500 registered organisations are involved, with a substantial combined workforce of 206,800 volunteers and paid workers.

This new research report (left) further explores these findings through qualitative research, including interviews with key figures across the VCSE sector, providing an understanding of who works and volunteers in this field, and their reasons and skills.

Recording of Professor Tony Chapman – Research Methods

We know from personal experience with people and communities how valuable our work is in the voluntary sector (VCSE). But how do we quantify this and tell a story with the data?

In this video, Professor Tony Chapman shares how he used pioneering methods to demonstrate the scale, value and impact of the VCSE sector. Tony will share the outcomes of the recently commissioned research in the BOB area exploring the impact of the not-for-profit sector.
